Ever heard of a Whole Food, Plant-Based diet and are you interested in getting started. In this article, we will give you some tips on how to start a Whole Food, Plant-Based diet, also known as a WFPB diet.
In short, the diet consists of eating plant-based foods and avoiding animal-based foods. In addition, preference is given to wholesome plant foods like brown rice instead of white rice, whole wheat bread instead of white bread and olives instead of olive oil.
This is mainly for health reasons, including a lower risk of developing chronic diseases.
So, let´s discuss some tips to help you get started.
- Eliminate one food at a time
When people switch to a new diet, they tend to go all-in. While for some this may work, for most of us it won’t. We recommend eliminating one food that is currently part of your way of eating but is not compliant with a WFPB diet per week. Each week eliminate another processed or animal-based food that you commonly consume. Replace it with a new, whole plant food that you have never eaten before.
- Eat the rainbow
Another common obstacle is that people think this is a restrictive diet. If that is the mindset, it will be difficult to stay with it. Try new foods, and especially colorful fruits and vegetables. Many have reported feeling better, healthier while also enjoying the new way of eating. Try foods like sweet potatoes, kale and berries and you will likely be surprised by its pure flavors. Just remember: Eat the rainbow!
- Cook in batches
Our third tip is to cook large portions and to freeze food in for later. You don’t need to cook something new every time. In the beginning, stick with one or two recipes that work well for you and make these dishes over and over. If you favorite food is burrito or pasta, try making a whole food, plant-based version of it. There are countless recipes you can get through websites like Forks Over Knives.
We hope these 3 tips will help you on your new dietary journey!
